Senna is a herbal medicinal product used for the short term relief of occasional constipation.

Senna belongs to a group of medicines called laxatives. It contains sennosides which work by making bowel muscles contract more often and with more force. This increased muscle action moves bowel contents to the rectum to be emptied and relieves constipation.

Laxatives do not affect the number of calories absorbed from food. This means they do not help with weight loss.

Senna tablets is to be taken by mouth only.

  • For oral administration.
  • The correct individual dose is the smallest required to produce a comfortable soft-formed motion.
  • Adults and the elderly: Swallow one to two tablets at night
  • Should not be used in children or adolescents under the age of 18 years.
  • New users should start with the lowest dose and increase it to the maximum dose if necessary. Once regularity has been regained dosage should be reduced and can usually be stopped.
  • If no bowel action has occurred after three days of progressively increased dosage, a medical examination should be considered.

Do not take this medicine for more than seven days. You should drink plenty of fluids while you are taking this medicine.

Consult your doctor if you do not have a bowel movement or your symptoms do not improve after three days, or if they get worse during treatment with this medicine.
